Pregnancy can oftentimes feel like a roller coaster of emotions no matter how well we try to prepare. As a woman nears the end of her pregnancy, things tend to get a little hectic. Things can become even more stressful if your due date comes and your bundle of joy has not made his or her arrival just yet. In the event that this happens to you, here are few tips on what you should do if you are past your due date.
First off, don’t panic. It is not uncommon for our little miracles to show up fashionably late. Only about 4 percent of babies are born on their exact due dates. Sometimes, they are not even late at all. Due dates are only estimates based on the first day of your last period. Because your due date is essentially an educated guess, it can potentially be off by a couple of days. Being a few days past your due date is nothing to fret over. Most times, your body knows when to go into labor.
Use this time to prepare physically and mentally for the new baby. Make small plans to go for a walk, have a lunch date, or even see a movie. It is never good to just sit around the house, so be sure to stay active. Set aside some quality time with your partner to enjoy a few more days of quiet. A tried and true recreational activity for expectant mothers has always been sleeping. Find time to take naps during the day, especially if you have been finding it hard to get rest at night. This free time can also be used as an additional opportunity for you to tie up any loose ends before the arrival of your baby.
If it comes down to it, induced labor is a viable and safe option for many women. Make sure you speak to your health care provider if you are considering this option. It is always a good idea to get the opinions of any friends who have done the same, however keep in mind that these are just opinions Every pregnancy is different, so it is important to weigh your options carefully, but be sure not to stress over it.
The best thing you can do for you and the baby is to keep positive and stay calm. It is more than fine to feel emotionally sensitive during this time, but it is not a good idea to let your emotions overwhelm you. Excessive amounts of stress do more harm than good.
